Life does not come without its big transitions, and these can be earth shattering for tiny bodies who are just learning how to human. If I had a parent come up to me and ask me what the easiest, least time consuming, best for development thing they can do to help prep their kiddo for a big transition - my answer 99% of the time would be a social story.

What is a social story?

A social story is literally just the semi-structured process of engaging in a conversation with your kiddo about something new that is coming up or even (although not always as effective) putting out a fire and talking about something that has already happened to help process the change.

Now, you may be a person who LOVES surprises and can effortlessly float through a major life shift or change in routine because you welcome chaos and love to live life in the moment. This is MOST LIKELY not your child. Kids like to know what is expected of them - it makes everything and everyone much happier.

As a school psychologist and a mother of a (now) two year old - here are my top three social stories to have in your arsenal right from the get go.

  1. Potty training

  2. Bedtime routine

  3. Use your words and not your hands

If you are looking for something inexpensive that you can get your hands on right away... go snag these printables. --> HERE

Otherwise if you're looking for something sturdy and can withstand multiple kids and lots of uses... here's a book list for you to check out.
